It's regularly maintained, but the piano is moved every night when the centre closes — so tuning can be hit or miss. Catch it on a good day and it sings. A real community centrepiece.

Nestled in the platinum lounge of the beautifully preserved Palace Cinema Como on Toorak Road, this Kawai baby grand is a gem. It has a lovely touch and warm, resonant tone that suits the grand art-deco surrounds. A more intimate and quiet setting — perfect for an unhurried session before a film.

Forest Hill Chase

A white Alex Steinbach mini grand tucked inside this quieter suburban shopping centre. Generally in reasonable condition with relatively low use, meaning it tends to hold its tune well. The signage officially states it's to be played when booked, but play nicely and respectfully and the community tends to enjoy it.

Westfield Doncaster

Found at the base of the main staircase near David Jones, this Yamaha baby grand is presented on a proper mini stage with rope bollards — it means business. Generally good sound and well looked-after. The signage requests experienced pianists only, so come prepared. A high-traffic, somewhat visible spot — but it's a lovely instrument for those who are ready for it.

A beautiful piano at Eden Oak in Geelong — a little further afield for Melbourne players but well worth the trip. A stunning instrument in an equally stunning setting.

Umbrella Bar

A sleek black Yamaha baby grand, approximately 30 years old, sitting in the warm art-filled surrounds of Umbrella Bar in Elsternwick. Feel free to sit down and play — guests love the live music and the atmosphere is welcoming. When performers have sets the piano isn’t freely available, so check what’s on first. The piano plays well; with the lid fully open the bass can sound a touch tinny, but close the lid and it sounds excellent.

Tempo Piano Room

A dedicated practice room on the bike path at 216 Albion Street Brunswick, opposite Anstey Station. A beautiful Beale baby grand in a quiet, intimate space — four chairs, four music stands, and good acoustics. Bookable by the hour with keypad entry, no fuss. Plays wonderfully.
